We started planting the gardens this past weekend. While we were planting I was really wishing I had that garden apron that has been on my to-do list for years. All I wanted was a simple apron with big pockets in the front for holding the seed packets. With the kiddos helping out more and more each year it would be nice to have both hands free to help them while we are planting. Sunday night I quickly made this apron. It is nothing too fancy, but just exactly what I needed.
I used some turquoise linen fabric that I picked up from the thrift store for $1 and paired it with some leftover fabric I had on hand. I believe I purchased the flowered fabric from JoAnn’s.
I ended up cutting out a circle skirt instead of a regular rectangle piece of fabric for the main part of the apron. Then I slightly ruffled the waist line to give it a full twirly look. I love how the circle skirt puffs the pockets out slightly. Now if it would only stop raining I could finish planting!
Any of you wear an apron when gardening? What is your favorite style?

I love your little garden apron! When I’m gardening, I usually wear a garden vest that has many pockets and spaces for tools, seeds, etc. Your post made me smile because just yesterday, I started a summer apron for myself with some of my fabric stash. I love the idea of making the circle for more ruffle. My apron is a flat front, but will have a long sash so I can tie it in the front and have ruffles around the bottom and sides. When using your stash, it’s always fun to have some restrictions to work around(ie. amount of material)! Happy Gardening Season!

Ok, this is so smart. I always have at least one kid trying to help me, but usually driving me nuts. And they usually help me loose my seeds.
This is such a smart idea. Thanks for sharing, as I know a couple of other people who would want one. Perfect gift!

I love aprons!!! I don’t even want to count how many I’ve made…but that’s ok…I don’t think you can have too many. We need to get our garden planted. We have it tilled and prepared but nothing planted yet.

ps—Still can’t believe we’ll get to meet in real life like next weekend! It all of the sudden seems real!

I wear aprons all the time! I love them because they are so functional and FUN! I have several full and half aprons with a sassy flounce and a big pocket so that when I am doing work around the house or even running errands I can stow my phone in the front pocket.
Old table cloths are also a GREAT source for fabric!
Sew creative,
Marci

Love this twirly apron. I think I’ll make this for teaching – the days when I NEED pockets handy. Thanks for the inspiration!
