I managed to spend a whole hour last night adding snaps to three dresses and cutting out some patterns. I made the dress below months ago while I was participating in Project Run and Play. I never really liked the dress once it was finished. I guess that is why it has taken me so long to finally add some snaps to it. It’s kinda sweet, just not my style. It is just missing something…any suggestions?Thankfully the girls like it much more then I do. I already foresee it will get lots of wear. There were tears shed when it was time to take it off. Then I finally finished up these two pinafore dresses that were supposed to be worn for Easter. I used the same pattern last year to make this dress and have wanted to make another one ever since. The pattern is from Sew Baby. The dresses are a really quick and easy sewing project. A great beginner project. As you can see the dresses are a little big. I made a size 4 to allow for growth.I guess you could say that these two little girls are pretty happy with their new dresses! I will admit, it sure does feel good to finally finish them up! Why did it take me so long to add some snaps?!

I agree that the dress looks sweet, maybe instead of adding something you can shorten the sleeves and bring up the waist? I think there is just too much plain/blank fabric in the middle and it makes it look like it’s missing something.

I just love it ALL. It’s just so wonderful the way you sew for them. You know I sew… but you make way more things your girls can wear than I do. I’m just impressed with how you do it. What’s there to change… she loves it. =)

All your dresses are adorable, but you’re right, that first one seems a smidge off. I think the largest piece of lace on the hem and sleeves might be just too big. It’s kinda swallowing her little arms right up! If you swapped that style out for something thinner, (trim it back to little flutter sleeves and a shorter hemline) I think it would help the proportions, and be absolutely precious. Lovely work though!

The dresses are so cute! Thw first dress is adorable and has almost a twenties. I really like the drop waist look and the length of the sleeves.if you do want to change it why don’t you try overdying the dress a dark pink coral color? If the ruffles were the same color as the fabric you might like it more.

Totally jealous – I have two of the cutest boys ever, but boys are just not very fun to sew for! Love the color of the coral dress. I’d shorten the sleeves – maybe put some elastic in them and make them bubble sleeves to even out the proportions from top to bottom. Then I’d bring a little modern to the retro look and silkscreen or paint a little white (to match the lace) bird where a pocket would go. Love to see all of your projects!

Great suggestions above! If the girls love it, don’t change it!?! My only thought was eliminate the wide lace at the bottom? Just a thought. The girls are getting bigger and even cuter 🙂 I too lag on the final touches sometimes, then I ponder why?! At least it gets done, maybe not always on time but it does get done 🙂

It needs some visual interest at the collar, if you’re going to leave the sleeves the way they are. Maybe a thin lace trim, and if that doesn’t add enough oomph, a second thing of trim, a little further out. Sort of echoing the skirt lace somewhat. Or maybe even just a plane ribbon or tape around the collar and then another at the waistline (same color as the lace)?

I have no suggestions—I just really really like the white trim against that salmon color.
And I have two dresses sitting on my table that just need closures on the back…but I don’t love the dresses so I’m totally unmotivated to put them on…why is something that should be so easy seem so icky?
