So I am going to try and bring back Fat Quarter Friday again. It is not going to be every Friday, but hopefully most. I have missed it and hope you have too! If you are new around here, Fat Quarter Friday is when I post a tutorial about a project that I have made using fat quarters or scraps. They are quick, easy little projects that only take a few hours to complete. If you want to see some of my previous Fat Quarter Friday projects you can check them out here or by clicking on Fat Quarter Friday Tutorials in my menu bar at the top of my blog.
I have received many emails over the years asking about my bibs and if I have a tutorial for them. It is actually amazing that I have never put one together before since I have made hundreds and hundreds of these little things.
Materials Needed: (will make two bibs)
*1 fat quarter of main fabric
*1 fat quarter of flannel
*1 fat quarter of backing material. I use minky, but I also like to use terry cloth on occasion. Start by printing off the templates, the link is below.
2 little hooligans baby bib templates.
I have included two sizes to print off, a newborn size and 6 months and up. Once you have printed and cut out the template, trace around the template onto the wrong side of your main fabric piece. Now layer the three fabrics like so: flannel on the bottom, then minky fabric right side up. Lastly, place your main fabric right side down. Pin fabrics in place. Sew directly onto your pen marks, except for at the top of the bib around the neck opening. You are going to sew on the mark for one of the sides and then leave a little space in the middle when sewing up the other side of the neck opening. Just leave enough room so that you can cut down the middle of the two sewn parts at the neck opening.See below how I left that little space in between the neck opening? You could also cut your template a little shorter on one of the ends to make it easier to trace around. I have made so many bibs that I just don’t forget to leave that little space. Also make sure you leave a 1 1/2″ opening on the side of the bib for turning right side out. Trim off excess fabric. Make sure you leave a little extra fabric at the opening for turning right side out. That way you can easily fold the edge in and stitch the opening shut while you are top stitching around the bib. Turn right side out.
Fold opening in and press flat. Add a tag.
Then top stitch all around the edges.
Add a snap, Velcor or a button. Whichever you prefer.
Always check to make sure the closure works!
And if it is a gift for someone else, make a cute little drawstring bag to hold it.
I think any gift seems more special when wrapped beautifully.
Plus no parent can ever have too many drawstring bags!

I love the idea of a square bib. Some of the rounded bibs you see in the stores are a little too narrow, but this bib is generous in width which is fantastic. It is very cool that you also have a little drawstring bag too, I love it.

Congratulations, the bib looks great. I like the idea of making my own bibs. These instructions look very simple to follow. I really like the material you have used, I love bold and bright colours for children. The bib bag is a great idea, I could match bib and bag with sheet sets I can make.

I just found your bib tutorial while looking for how to size the neck opening for baby bibs. Your tutorial is GREAT! Thank you for sharing and also introducing the Snapsetter tool! Can you tell me where you order your labels from? I love them! I have some iron on ones that work okay, but not great all the time. Thanks! And, would love to have you share this post (or any others at my weekly #throwbackthursdaylinkup

I love your bibs. I usually make bibs with match quilts. The matching drawstring bag is a great idea too. I also love your labels. What company do you use for your labels? I want to start putting my labels designs on my things. But haven’t found the a company that suit me. Thanks for the tutorial.

Could you post the dimensions of both bids and neck holes. I do not have access to a printer so I need to draw my own template. Thank you. Great tutorial and beautiful bibs.

Awesome! I like the idea of a square bib and the use of snap on it. Square bib is not so common in many tutorial that I have seen. I think I must ask this, what is easier to make baby bibs with snap or the Velcro one? I love these baby bibs! Good job!
This is the best tutorial I have seen on making bibs. I also love your labels and would love to know where you order them from says

I have a sick special needs daughter and this bib is perfect but I don’t see and have no sense of design. Plus we are in the hospital alot so I can’t leave and learn to see. All her bibs are too small and she needs bigger ones but not too big she chews alot especially her fingers so I am getting chewing beads but with that comes more drooling. Can I buy some of these? Most of the stuff she gets to ware is pink, white, red blue, the common color but I love that orange and teal. We head to the hospital 2.5 hours from home again tomorrow for back surgery again and hip surgery. She is 8 but the level of a 9 month old. Doesn’t walk and can’t understand much of what she says. I am a single parent and no family so you can only reach me by cell, email or fb. My daughter Jordyn has her own Facebook if you want to see maybe her neck or chest size. She is about 43 pounds, missing part of her brain, heart problems kidney and lung problems, back hips ankles weak muscel tone and 22nd in US to be diagnosed with kdvs. Rare syndrome where they don’t know much or life expectancy but oldest is 26 so we could use it for a long time. I would need several depending on price and if you make gtube pads or gtube pad covers I need them as well. Please let me know. We will be in ICU for the next couple days but since it’s just me and her I can talk, text and check email. 423_994_3639 melissa_albert97@yahoo.com. thanks so much
