For Christmas this year I decided to make one of my niece’s a fully lined wool coat. I purchased the wool from Fabric.com and used McCall’s Pattern M6641. When I purchased the fabric I thought it was going to be a medium weight fabric but it turned out to be a lightweight wool/polyester blend. I guess that is the downside of ordering fabric on line. I do however love the fabric and the feel of it. Since it is a 50/50 blend the coat has a nice soft feel to it and hopefully it wont be too itchy either.
The pattern was easy to follow except when it came to hemming the bottom layers and the sleeves. It was confusing with the different layers, plus the pattern was a little vague. So I just ended up hemming it the only way I knew how. I know it is not perfect, but it works. And yes, it drives me crazy that it is not perfect.
I did add a little hang tag on the inside for easy hanging. One little detail that all coats should have.
I would have to say that the hood is my favorite part, along with the buttons. Thankfully the lightweight material made sewing in button holes easy. I was really nervous about adding them in but they came out great. You just never know what is going to happen when you are working with a new pattern or materials. The only thing I wish I would have done differently was add in more top stitching…and of course properly hem it.Fingers crossed that she likes it.
Have any of you made a lined coat before? Any good tips you want to share?

It looks really great Christina. I love the loop idea too and the lining looks so pretty with the fabric. My couture sewing book advises to sew the coat hem first, then fold the lining over and hem it to the coat by hand. I think that’s what London tailors do too.

That is awesome, I never would have guessed anything about the hem not following directions. The hood is an awesome detail piece. Thanks for sharing your hard work!

I love the color of the lining. In sewing coats, jackets with lining, I always hem the item first then hem the lining over and attaching it to the garment. I like to do all hemming by hand. (Am I making sense?) I am sure that your niece will love anything made especially for her by you. Gifts from the heart and hands are always so special.

What a cute coat! Love the hood. Hemming is always tricky with coats, I think. Yours looks great!

That lining is gorgeous! Well, really the whole coat is awesome 🙂 I agree, that loop should be a requirement in all coats/jackets!

Hi! I have the same pattern, Im a beginner and am doing view B and got a little lost at the contrast cuffs, but pushed through. Im confused about the hood, Step 23 seems to be the last instance of the hood, but it just ends with basting, so its not sew on…am I missing something. Any help you could offer would be AWESOME!!!!
