Today I am one of the stops on the Shades Of Me Sewing Series.
As you can see I chose the color blue. I found this beautiful cable knit fabric from Girl Charlee to work with. I just searched their site and could not find it anywhere…darn! This fabric is so comfy! It is a medium weight fabric but needs to be lined if you are going to wear it as a dress. It will be fine as a sweater as long as it is going to be layered over a shirt.
I cut apart an old hooded sweatshirt to use as a template. I have been doing this a lot lately. Instead of throwing out my worn-out or stained clothes I just cut them up and use them as a template. That way I have a pattern that I know will fit me. It is hard finding the right patterns to fit my body sometimes. I am still debating on the length so you may notice that I just serged the edges of the bottom until I decide. I’m just not sure if I want it to be a dress, a tunic or a hooded sweater. Any thoughts? I made the leggings out of a knit nightgown that I found at Walmart. It just happened to be the perfect fabric. I simply used a pair of my favorite leggings as the template. The infinity scarf was made from the same white knit fabric that I lined my dress with. The hat is not handmade. It is from The North Face. It just happened to match perfectly, plus I needed it too keep warm. It was about 10 when I was taking these pictures of myself.I am really excited about this little dress because it is the first garment that I actually used my overlock machine for the whole entire thing. It is amazing how fast it is to make a garment when you can sew and serge it in one stitch. Plus it just looks so much better. It’s a shame it took me this long to figure out how to use it! It really does take garment making to a whole new level.
A little peek at the hood and the back of the dress.
Now makes sure you enter to the giveaway below! This is one of the most amazing giveaways I have ever seen! I really hope I win!

Uh, these are some really nice pics. And what a great fabric. I love that you used an old sweater of yours for the cutting. I did the same yesterday – fingers crossed that it’ll work…

This looks so comfortable and warm!! I’d say leave it dress length. Totally. That hood looks perfect too. The photos are amazing, you have the best scenery!

You look so cozy and cute in your sweater dress! I love how you use your old clothes. They make the best patterns and for free too. I tried to find that cable knit after seeing your dress but couldn’t find it either. Waaaa. Its perfect.

Oh Christina these photos are beautiful and so are you. Blue is such a good color on you. An I would keep the sweater as a dress, you can always shorten it next year into a tunic and then into a sweater the year after! haha. The fabric is awesome too. Thanks so much for being on the tour.

I love this outfit…perfect for New Hampshire. I should know…I live here :). Using a sweatshirt for a template is such a great idea. I have thought of doing that with things like my girls’ Land’s End and Hannah Anderson dresses. (I only have one Hannah Anderson dress that I purchased at a thrift store last year) I have thought that if I took that dress and used it as a template, I could recreate that $40 dress for about $10-15. Maybe some time you could do a tutorial and show us how you use clothing as templates. I was also wondering…could you briefly explain how you lined your dress/hood. I have some hooded shawls I’d like to make for my girls, and I want to add a lining to the pattern. It doesn’t call for one, but in NH we need it! It looks like you put lining and outer fabric right sides together, stitched and turned right-side out…am I right? Absolutely adorable and creative outfit, Christina. I also love that you used a nightgown from Walmart to make the leggings…what a fantastic idea. Thanks for the inspiration!

Well, Christina, you already know how adorable I think you are! I absolutely love this dress and I wish I could find that fabric. I searched too and didn’t see it! Great idea with tracing your old clothing… I used to do that and for some reason, I stopped, so thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for participating… you look absolutely fabulous!

Christina, you look so cheeky in the first photo! Love it 🙂 The outfit is great and I am in love wit the tunic/dress/jumper 😉 I like the length as it is now. I might be enjoying Australian sun now, but I remember how cold snowy winters can be!
What a great idea about cutting up clothes you know fits you well as use them to make patterns! I have heard about this before, just never done it. Starting now!
